Burnout: Managing the “Wear & Tear” of Chronic Stress
Heavy workloads, intricate problems, and dwindling resources – these are on-going challenges facing our teams today. These challenges are amplified in the presence of emotional exhaustion and depletion. A recent global study found that 1 in 4 employees experience symptoms indicative of burnout. How do we help our teams retain the ability to think clearly and stay well in the face of these complex realities?
This session provides strategies to manage and mitigate burnout and the chronic “wear and tear” of working in a helping profession Participants will learn contributing factors to burnout and evidence-informed tools to stay focused and clear-headed.

Empathic Strain & Secondary Trauma: Foundational Skills for Helping Professionals
Helping professionals pay an emotional price for doing the work that they do. Repeated and chronic exposure to difficult stories can lead to experiences of empathic strain and secondary trauma. How do we protect our staff who bear witness to suffering, and who hear, see, and read about trauma daily?
These “costs of caring” are normal and common when working with traumatic content or supporting people who are chronically in crisis. These sessions explore the impact of empathic strain and secondary trauma on the physical and emotional well-being on helping professionals. Participants will learn practical strategies to stay well while doing difficult work.

Trauma-Informed Care: Serving Those with Complex Needs
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to working with people with complex needs. Responsive, ethical, and compassionate care is only possible when our teams understand and recognize the pervasive impact of trauma on well-being. Trauma-informed care is an approach to service provision and policy development that promotes a culture of safety, collaboration, and empowerment, ensuring better outcomes for both staff and the people they serve.
This session provides foundational knowledge about the prevalence, presentation, and impact of trauma. Participants will learn best-practice recommendations and strategies for providing trauma-sensitive care.
